SAN MARINO - The rooms of Rio Fiumicelli - 1996

"Un bel cespuglio.../così voto nel mezzo che concede fresca stanza fra le ombre più nascose"
(Ariosto, Orlando Furioso I,37)

The concept of room comes from a previous photographic work on the visual border of the area of the rivers Marano and Fiumicelli, where I realized that at the edges of the cultivated fields, of the pastures, and the calanchi (gully), there where zones with spontaneous vegetation, little bushes, areas that gave the idea of a park, (wild park); I was surprised by how small their extension was.

I associate with those bushes, in opposition to the openness and wideness of the fields and calanchi, the idea of a small scale as refuge, that corresponds to the idea of room.

I thought of developing this idea of room in a sequence of photographs and, focusing on the possible

connotations of a non-built room, I worked on the concept of refuge (as a place with a roof), the concept of scenery
( as perception of the room from outside) and of wall (the perception of the room by the perimeter).
So I looked for places with these characteristics and, practically, I used the square format, to concentrate the disposition of the elements in the image composition, and I choose the W/B to abstract and to conform the images.

Then, from the hypotheses. discussions and ideas that emerged at the Laboratory, I introduced in the room the concept of artificial as human presence, or sign, with the intention to search for and include among the places to shoot at, also those where human contamination is well visible.
