The Cothon

COTHON

At Porta Sud (Southern Gate) there is the Cothon, an artificial port serving as a dry dock, connected to the sea, about 51 by 35.50 metres and 2.50-metre deep under the sea level. It could berth ships with a maximum drawing of 1 metre.

It seems it was related to the commercial exchanges taking place at Porta Sud (Southern Gate).  Probably it was used to load and unload goods.  However, the hypothesis that it was a dry dock is valid.

There are the remains of a house of the 7th century B.C. in the Southern Gate area that was probably a base for the commercial exchanges and activities taking place near the Cothon.
