PORTA GARIBALDI, THE ANCIENT PORTA DI MARE (SEA GATE)

Along the Marsala walls there were four gates: Porta Mazara, Porticella, Porta Nuova, and Porta di Mare (Mazara Gate, Small Gate, New Gate, and Sea Gate).
This last one changed its name into Porta Garibaldi after Garibaldi entered Marsala on May 11th, 1860.
Marquis of Villabianca described it as the noblest and most elegant one among the town gates “…it is of noble construction with a dome, columns and balustrade of beautiful manufacture…
